As a Principal Electrical Engineer on the Spot electrical team you will act as a technical expert in the development of circuit boards and electrical subassemblies for Boston Dynamic’s quadruped robots. You will provide technical leadership for various aspects of new product development and may be tasked with technical leadership of small cross-functional technical teams. The ideal candidate will have broad electrical engineering knowledge with some specialization in one or more fields such as power electronics, embedded computing, high-speed design, or RF. You’ll love working on a fun, collaborative, and talented team for one of the world’s coolest robots.

Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. Now we are quickly becoming a recognized leader in automation solutions for industrial applications and warehouse logistics.

How you will make an impact:

  • Develop (document, design, simulate, test, support) digital, power, RF, and/or mixed signal circuit boards

  • Be responsible for robot subsystems through architecture, development, and volume manufacturing

  • Lead crossfunctional engineering teams as required (e.g. a tiger team to resolve an issue or a design team to develop a new robot subassembly)

  • Be an electronics guru for the team to learn from and bounce ideas off of

  • Oversee and/or layout circuit boards in CAD

  • Triage, troubleshoot, and diagnose robot electrical failures to root cause

  • Author technical documentation such as specifications, schematics, test plans, and reports

  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, manufacturing, compliance, and test teams

  • Lead and participate in design reviews

  • Author Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)

  • Contribute to team process development initiatives

Required Skills:

  • BS/MS in electrical engineering, computer engineering, robotics, or closely-related field

  • 12+ years of directly related work experience

  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering

  • Some specialization in the areas of power electronics, embedded computing, high-speed design, or RF

  • Embedded computing and/or robotics systems knowledge

  • Desire and ability for crossfunctional team technical leadership

  • Product design experience

  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout software (e.g. Altium)

  • Prior experience using a PLM (e.g. Arena)

Nice to have:

  • Ability to code in C/C++ or Python (any of these is a big plus)

  • Experience with using and developing on Linux operating systems

  • Familiarity with the concepts of functional safety (e.g. IEC61508, ISO13849, IEC61511, and/or ISO26262)

  • Knowledge of circuit board manufacturing DfX and best practices

  • Experience with various simulation tools such as ANSYS HFSS

We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.
